Carrie Normand

Ward 7 School Committee

Re-elect on November 5

WHO I AM:

My husband David Zraket and I are the proud parents of a 2019 Somerville High School graduate and a rising sophomore. For thirteen years I have been active in the Somerville Public Schools as a reading tutor, Special Education Parent Advisory Council member, PTA member, School Council member, classroom volunteer, and enthusiastic supporter of youth sports and the performing arts.  For the past six years, I have represented Ward 7 on the Somerville School Committee. I am proud of all we have accomplished so far, and I am eager to continue the district’s work on equity, access, and innovation. My mission is to create an inclusive and equitable learning community for all children across Somerville.

WHILE SERVING ON THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE, WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED:
  • Whole Child: developing the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical potential of each student and provide them with the skills, opportunities, and resources to nurture their well-being and help them realize their full potential

  • Massachusetts Consortium for Innovative Education Assessment (MCIEA): Creation of local assessments that served as the foundation for the MCIEA, an innovative shift from standardized tests to performance-based assessments that provides teachers with flexibility and room to be creative

  • Early Education Initiatives: Expanded access to high quality PreK across Somerville

  • Mental Health Supports: Successfully advocated for the expansion of College and Career Advisory positions at the high school and increased targeted mental health programs for junior high school, and access to therapy at school for all students

  • Children’s Cabinet: a partnership between Somerville Public Schools, the city of Somerville, and community partners to develop wraparound services for students and families

SPECIFICALLY, IN WARD 7, I HAVE:
  • Tutored students on a weekly basis at the West Somerville school

  • Advocated for the creation of a Pre-K classroom at West Somerville Neighborhood School

  • Taught memoir writing at the Somerville Council on Aging

  • Volunteered to join the Board of 3LPlace

A VOTE FOR CARRIE NORMAND WILL KEEP THE FOCUS ON:
  • Education Innovation: Secured grant funding to redesign the structure and curriculum for Somerville High School to include more project-based learning and to make Next Wave/Full Circle to be competency based

  • Equity & Diversity: After passing a strong diversity hiring policy in March, we are now developing an equity policy to ensure all students have access to the supports and services that they need

  • Increased Transparency: Allocated funding to make the Somerville Public School website and School Committee minutes searchable
